Thors Park

SotM Replacement

We are delighted to announce we are working to provide improved care pathways with the addition of two bespoke single person services at Thors Park.

This service is being created to provide service users with a care pathway from the existing four self-contained bespoke apartments.

These two single person services will each have their own front door, lounge, kitchen to help promote independent living skills and an ensuite bathroom.

This service is situated within the extensive grounds of Thors Park  and will have access to a private patio area and secure garden.

Thors Park in Essex is an Independent Hospital for Men with Learning Disabilities

Thors Park is an independent hospital situated in Thorrington, North East Essex. Thors Park can provide support for up to 12 men, there are two elements to the service:

  • An eight bed service which provides assessment andintervention for men living with a learning disability, complex needs and behaviours that can be perceived as challenging.
  • Four self-contained bespoke apartments delivering 24 hour care and support within a structured and therapeutic environment. This is for individuals who require more intensive support.

The service can also support people who have additional mental and physical ill-health needs and those who have been detained under the Mental Health Act. When people come to Thors Park it may be for the following reasons; they could be moving from a home environment, a supported living or from a residential service due to an illness or a crisis in their life. They may come following a placement from an NHS or other specialist learning disability service or following a stay at a secure unit.

At Thors Park we believe that everyone should be treated as a full and valued member of their community with the same rights as everyone else. Therefore, our focus is on rehabilitation and the improvement of the health and well-being of service users, developing trusting relationships and attaining positive outcomes. Service users are encouraged to identify and achieve their own personal aspirations using person centred thinking and approaches. We pride ourselves at Thors Park on working hard with the people, their families and those closest to them to find out what is important to them and what their hopes and dreams for the future are. This is part of our commitment to use every opportunity we can to hear and act on the views of those we support and those who know and care about them

Thors Park is set in extensive grounds accessed via a private lane in the heart of the Essex countryside. It offers generous living areas including space to enable everyone the opportunity to spend time alone or with others. When people come to Thors Park we ask them how they would like to personalise their bedroom and we support them to do that. Additionally Thors Park has four bespoke self contained apartments each with bedroom, living and kitchen facilities and its own access to a private outdoor space.

There are a number of rooms at Thors Park which are dedicated to activities and supporting life skills in readiness for people moving on. There is a life skills kitchen for people wanting to prepare or cook food for themselves or theirvisitors should wish to. There is a large art room where people can enjoy a range of creative table top crafts, in addition to a games room and an IT room. The grounds at Thors Park are extensive and there are plenty of outdoor activities available for individuals to enjoy. Patio and seating areas for people and their visitors to enjoy are a popular choice. Thors Park is located in the small village of Thorrington which has a few local amenities including a shop and a post office. The service is a short drive from both Colchester and Clacton where there are plenty more community facilities for people to access including leisure centres, social clubs, shops, colleges, and work placement settings. Thors Park takes full advantage of its picturesque surroundings, there are many outdoor leisure choices including walks and visits to the nearby Brightlingsea beach.

Our goal is to enable people to structure their time; build relationships and establish a balance between therapy, selfcare, work and leisure as appropriate to their individual needs. Community based activities give people opportunities to meet others, experience new activities, participate in leisure activities and practice social skills. Activities depend on individual preferences and can include a variety of community based and educational choices.

Person Centred Care

Thors Park - Person Centred Care

Danshell Logo small3When an individual is admitted to Thors Park we work with them to ensure that the care we deliver is person centred. Using person centred approaches and tools we find out what is important to them, how they want us to assist them and, crucially, their dreams and aspirations. This information informs the care and support we provide and helps us to ensure we are clear about what is working or not working for the individual in their day to day lives.

We aim to ensure that we utilise all opportunities to hear and act on the views of the people who use Thors Park and those who know and care about them. This includes ensuring they, and their family and carers are fully involved in processes such as the Care Programme Approach (CPA) and in evaluating the service we provide.

Family Matters

Thors Park - Family Matters

familyWe recognise that the people we serve are part of a wider circle of family, friends and networks that are important to them and, important to us.

We encourage our service users to identify family and friends who care about them. We aim to work in partnership with them to ensure we provide the right service for their relative but also to support them in their own right as a family carer.

Personal Activities Plan

Thors Park - Personal Activities Plan

activities twoThe organisation employs dedicated activities co-ordinators who support service users to have individual person centred plans.

The wants, needs and interests of each individual are established through a variety of sources of information and communication with key people. Service users are supported to participate in social activities that may be of interest to them through the well-established network of community based groups.

home-easyreadOur organisation is committed to delivering care and support in a safe, dignified and respectful manner. We have an extensive governance system that monitors individual and organisation performance against a range of safety and outcome indicators. Using electronic reporting systems we are able to monitor and act swiftly in response to incidents or untoward events.

Across all services there is an independent and confidential whistle blowing policy and service for all staff to use if they are worried about service user safety, care and well-being.

Service User Involvement

Thors Park - Service User Involvement

Thinking planIndividuals are encouraged and supported to say how they feel about all aspects of using the service. This includes their views about how we provide support to them and also about aspects of service delivery such as day opportunities. There is a Service User Forum that meets regularly and discusses a wide a range of issues from social events to day to day issues such as mealtimes and menu's.

The wider organisation also has processes in place to ensure the voice of those who use our services is heard. These include forums, service user questionnaires and exit questionnaires that utilise a suite of easy read materials and technologies to enable maximum participation.

All service users have direct access to an independent advocate. The advocacy group working at Thors Park is called VoiceAbility.
